Rug sizes by room type.
Living room: 8x10 for medium rooms (10x14 if all furniture fits on the rug; 9x12 most common). The rug should extend under the front legs of the sofa and side chairs at minimum.
Dining room: rug extends 24 inches past the chairs in every direction when the chairs are pulled out. For a standard 6-foot table, 8x10 rug; for an 8-foot table, 9x12; for a 10-foot table, 10x14.
Bedroom: 8x10 or 9x12 for a queen-sized bed with rug extending 18 to 24 inches past the bed on the foot and sides. Alternative: runners on each side of the bed plus a smaller rug at the foot.
Entryway: runner sized to the entry length. For a covered entry hallway, a 2.5x8 or 3x10 runner; for a foyer landing, a 4x6 or 5x7 anchored under the entry table.
Common questions.
- What size rug should I get for a living room?
- 8x10 for medium living rooms (12 to 14 feet) and 9x12 to 10x14 for larger rooms. The rug should be large enough that the front legs of the sofa and side chairs sit on it; better is all furniture sitting on the rug.
- How big should a dining room rug be?
- The rug should extend 24 inches past the chairs in every direction when chairs are pulled out from the table. For a 6-foot table, an 8x10 rug; for an 8-foot table, 9x12.
- What is the most common rug size mistake?
- Buying a rug too small for the room. A 5x7 or 6x9 rug in a 14-foot living room looks like a placemat and makes the space read disjointed. Default to one size larger than feels right.
