The four decisions.
Size: standard single vanity widths are 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 inches. Double vanity widths are 60, 72, 84 inches. Depth is typically 21 inches standard. Height varies: 32 inches traditional, 36 inches modern (matches kitchen counter height, easier on the back).
Installation: floor-mounted is the traditional default. Wall-mounted (floating) creates a contemporary look and makes the floor read continuous. Freestanding (furniture-style) reads as bathroom furniture rather than built-in cabinetry.
Single or double: single sink for primary baths in small to medium homes and all secondary baths. Double sink in primary baths where two people get ready simultaneously (60 inch minimum width for double).
Countertop: quartz and quartzite for premium maintenance-free; natural stone (marble, granite) for premium with care; solid wood for warmth (with proper sealing); concrete for industrial modern; engineered solid surface for budget.
Common questions.
- What is the standard bathroom vanity size?
- Standard single vanity widths are 24, 30, 36, and 48 inches. 30 to 36 inches is the typical small-to-medium bath; 48 inches is the standard primary bath single. Standard depth is 21 inches; standard height is 32 inches (traditional) or 36 inches (modern, matches kitchen counter height).
- Should the vanity be floating or floor-mounted?
- Floating reads contemporary, makes the floor look continuous, and is easier to clean under. Floor-mounted is traditional and provides more storage. The choice is mostly aesthetic; both are buildable.
- How wide do I need for a double vanity?
- 60 inches minimum width for a double vanity, with sinks centered 30 inches apart. 72 inches gives more space between sinks and around them. Below 60 inches, the sinks are too close and the storage between them disappears.
