The four decisions.
Hanging height: bottom of pendant 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Higher and the pendant loses focus on the work surface; lower and it obstructs the view across the island.
Scale: single pendant width about one-third of island width. Cluster of 3 pendants: each pendant about one-fifth of island width, spaced equal centers.
Count: 2 medium pendants suit a 2 metre island; 3 medium suit 2.5 to 3.5 metres; a single large linear pendant suits 3 to 4 metres. Spacing minimum 60 cm centre-to-centre.
Color temperature: 2700K for warm hospitality feel; 3000K for residential default; 3500K for high-precision kitchen task. Match adjacent fixtures within the same kitchen to avoid mixed temperatures.
Common questions.
- How high should kitchen pendants hang?
- 30 to 36 inches above the countertop for the bottom of the pendant. Lower than 30 obstructs vision across the island; higher than 36 loses the focused task light effect.
- How many pendants over a kitchen island?
- 2 medium pendants on a 2-metre island, 3 on 2.5-3.5 metres, or a single linear pendant on 3-4 metres. Maintain 60 cm minimum centre-to-centre spacing between fixtures.
- Should kitchen pendants match other lighting in the room?
- Match the metal finish across the room (don't mix brass and chrome). Color temperature must match within the kitchen (2700K to 3500K consistent). Pendant style can contrast with sconces and recessed lights if the finish and temperature align.
