How Hot Should a Sauna Be? Temperature by Type.

How hot a sauna should be depends on the type. A traditional Finnish sauna runs hot, usually 150 to 195°F, because the high air temperature and the steam are the whole experience. An infrared sauna runs much cooler, around 110 to 140°F, because it warms your body directly rather than heating the air. Within those ranges, the right setting comes down to the experience you want and using it safely.

The right range by type.

A traditional sauna is typically set between 150 and 195°F, with many regular users landing around 175 to 185°F. The bench height matters: heat rises, so the top bench is hottest and the lower bench is milder, which lets people in the same sauna sit at the heat they want.

An infrared sauna runs at 110 to 140°F. That sounds much cooler, and it is, because infrared heats the body directly rather than the air, so a lower number still produces a sweat. Comparing the two on temperature alone is misleading; they work differently.

Why traditional runs hot.

The high temperature in a traditional sauna is the point. The hot air, the radiant heat off the stones, and the steam from pouring water all depend on the room being genuinely hot. Drop the temperature too far and you lose the löyly and the intensity that define the experience.

That is also why the stones and a capable heater matter. The heater has to reach and hold the high temperature and recover quickly after you add water for steam.

Using it safely.

High heat is a real load on the body, so build up rather than starting at the top bench at the maximum setting. Hydrate before and after, keep sessions sensible, and step out if you feel lightheaded. Avoid alcohol, and if you have a cardiovascular condition or are pregnant, talk to a clinician before regular use. None of this is medical advice; it is basic caution around real heat.

Most people settle into a temperature and session length that suits them within a few visits. There is no prize for the hottest, longest session.

The heater and controller.

Hitting and holding the right temperature is a job for the heater and its controller, which is why those components are worth specifying well. A capable, name-brand heater with a proper controller reaches the set temperature, holds it steadily, and recovers fast after a steam pour. A weak or generic unit struggles, especially in a larger or outdoor cabin.

Crateworks builds traditional saunas in clear cedar with name-brand heaters sized to the cabin, so the temperature is there when you want it, as part of an outdoor wellness package.

Common questions.

How hot should a traditional sauna be?
A traditional Finnish sauna is usually set between 150 and 195°F, with many regular users around 175 to 185°F. Heat rises, so the upper bench is hotter and the lower bench is milder, letting people sit at the temperature they prefer. The high heat is what makes the steam and the experience work.
Why is an infrared sauna cooler than a traditional one?
An infrared sauna runs at 110 to 140°F because it warms your body directly with panels rather than heating the air. A traditional sauna has to heat the air and the stones to a high temperature to create radiant heat and steam, so it runs much hotter. The lower infrared number still produces a sweat because the heating method is different.
Is a hotter sauna better?
Not necessarily. The right temperature is the one you can use comfortably and safely for a sensible session. Build up gradually rather than starting at the maximum, stay hydrated, and step out if you feel unwell. Anyone with a heart condition should check with a clinician first.
