Operation and clearance.
Patio sliding: panels move horizontally on a track. No swing clearance needed inside or out, which makes it the default for tight floor plans, behind dining tables, or against deck rails. Maximum opening is limited to half the total width because at least one panel stays fixed.
French: two panels swing open from the center. Needs 30-inch swing clearance per panel inside or outside, depending on swing direction. Maximum opening is the full width minus the frame. Both panels can be locked when one is opened, or the inactive panel can be set as a fixed sidelight.
Sightline and seal.
Patio sliding has a single check rail at the middle where panels meet, plus track rails at sill and head. Closed sightline shows three horizontal lines and continuous glass elsewhere.
French has a vertical center post (astragal) where the two panels meet and shows two distinct doors. Each panel is independent, so the sightline reads more traditional.
Weather seal: a multi-point lock sliding door seals continuously around the perimeter; a French door seals at the perimeter and at the astragal but requires careful gasket detail at the center seam to match sliding performance.
Common questions.
- Which is better, sliding or French doors?
- Sliding (patio) for tight floor plans, frequent foot traffic, and slim sightlines. French for traditional aesthetic, full opening width, and rooms where swing clearance is available. Neither is universally better.
- Are French doors more expensive than patio doors?
- At the same width and spec, French doors run modestly higher than sliding because of the hinge hardware and astragal detail, but the gap is small (10 to 20 percent typically). Larger sliding doors get more expensive faster because of track and roller engineering.
- Do French doors seal as well as sliding?
- Close, but sliding typically has a slight edge because the perimeter seal is continuous and not interrupted by an astragal joint. Multi-point lock hardware on French doors closes most of the gap.
