Width and height standards.
Single entry: 32, 34, 36 inches wide (3-0 = 36) with 36 the dominant standard. Height 80 inches (6-8). 84 inches (7-0) is the next standard up; common in new construction post-2010.
Double entry: 60 inches (5-0, two 30-inch panels), 64 inches (5-4, two 32-inch panels), 72 inches (6-0, two 36-inch panels) total width. Height same as single, typically 80 or 84 inches.
Patio sliding: 60, 72, 96, 120 inches total width in 2-panel through 4-panel configurations. Height 80 inches standard, 96 inches in upmarket builds.
When custom kicks in.
Oversized openings (wider than 6-0 single, taller than 7-0, any pivot panel) are custom. Aluminum pivot doors typically run 4-0 to 5-0 wide and 8-0 to 10-0 tall; that is well outside any standard. Bifold and lift-slide oversized openings are entirely custom.
Renovation projects on pre-1950 homes often have non-standard openings (33 inch width is common, height varies). Always measure the rough opening before assuming standard sizing.
Common questions.
- What is the standard exterior door size?
- Standard US single exterior door is 36 inches wide by 80 inches tall (3-0 x 6-8). Standard double is 60 to 72 inches wide by 80 inches tall.
- Are oversized exterior doors more expensive?
- Yes. Anything outside the 36 x 80 single standard runs on custom lead time and pricing. Oversized doors need heavier hardware, reinforced frames, and often special hinges, which compounds cost. Factory-direct narrows the premium versus retail custom.
- Can I get a non-standard exterior door size?
- Yes. All Crateworks exterior doors are built to order, so non-standard widths and heights are not a separate product line; you specify the dimension and we build to it.

Working with a non-standard opening?
Send the rough opening dimensions. We build to order, so non-standard is the same lead time as standard.
