How much does a custom closet cost?
Installed, between roughly $317 and $1,825 per linear foot of closet wall, depending on tier. The value franchises sit at $330 to $400, California Closets runs a published four-level ladder from $317 to $1,825, and independent boutique millwork lands near $1,200. Those are all installed prices, according to the Crateworks Retail Benchmark, captured 2026-08-06.
Linear foot means the run of wall the system occupies, not floor area. A closet with 30 linear feet of wall is a normal 10 by 10 walk-in. Everything in this category is quoted that way, which is why a single per-closet number is close to meaningless without the footage attached.
What do the national closet companies charge per linear foot?
California Closets is the only company at the premium end that publishes a full price ladder, which is why it is the reference everyone else gets quoted against. Their own four tiers run $317, $583, $1,055 and $1,825 per linear foot installed. The value franchises undercut the bottom of that and nothing above the top of it publishes at all.

What does that come to for a whole walk-in?
A 10 by 10 walk-in has about 30 linear feet of wall. At the ladder above that is roughly $9,900 to $12,000 from a value franchise, $17,500 at California Closets Level 2, $31,650 at Level 3 and $54,750 at Level 4. Boutique millwork lands near $36,000. A closet island is a separate line at about $2,500 installed.

These are straight multiplications and they are a simplification. Corners, an island, a shoe wall or a lighting package all move the real number, and no closet is priced by running a tape along the wall and stopping there.
Why do two quotes for the same closet differ by three times?
Usually because one includes installation and the other does not. Install labour on fitted work runs $55 to $200 per linear foot, which is 30 to 45 percent of an installed ticket. A supply-only number and an installed number for the identical closet are not comparable, and most cost guides mix them without saying so.
Before comparing anything, get all three of these on the table: the linear footage, whether the price includes install, and what the fronts are actually made of. A melamine or thermally-fused laminate box and a real wood veneer box can carry the same price at different sellers, and the difference does not show in a photograph.
What is a linear foot, and why is everything priced that way?
A linear foot is one foot of wall run that the closet system occupies, measured along the wall and ignoring height and depth. Cabinetry is priced this way because cost scales with the run, not with the floor area of the room. A tall system and a short one across the same wall cost far more similarly than the square footage would suggest.
To estimate your own: measure each wall the system will run along and add them up. A reach-in on one 8-foot wall is 8 linear feet. A 10 by 10 walk-in fitted on three walls is about 30. Multiply by the tier you are shopping and you have the order of magnitude before anyone visits.
What does Crateworks charge?
We quote per project against your drawing, and we do not publish a per linear foot number. Two honest reasons. We supply, your builder installs, so our number and the installed numbers above are not the same kind of figure. And the price moves with the package, because a closet ordered alongside the kitchen and the millwork does not cost what a closet ordered alone costs.
